Australian Open | Medvedev, Tsitsipas and Gauff win

2021 and 2022 finalist Daniil Medvedev won his first round match 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 1-0 (forfeit) against Térence Atmane at the Australian Open on Monday.


Before forfeiting at the start of the fourth set, Atmane led 12-9 for aces. Medvedev took advantage of six of his 19 break points in the match. For his part, Atmane broke Medvedev three times.

After a first round of one hour and two minutes, Tsefanos Tsitsipas won his duel against Zizou Bergs 5-7, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.

The seventh seed hit 38 winners, compared to 28 unforced errors. Bergs hit more winners, with 52, but also more unforced errors, with 44.

The young American Ben Shelton defeated the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in three sets of 6-2, 7-6 (2), 7-5. Shelton hit 14 aces and took advantage of five out of six break points.

Shelton hit 53 winners and made 40 unforced errors. The American won 71% of his points at the net.

Gauff easily goes to 2e round, Vondrousova eliminated

American and reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff won her first round match 6-3, 6-0 against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova at the Australian Open on Monday.

“I was a little nervous in the first run,” Gauff said. I think I did well in return, and then found my serve towards the end of the set. When I felt nervous at 3-3, I told myself to feel good and have fun. It helped me relax. »

Gauff will face fellow American Caroline Dolehide in the next round.

The 19e Top seed Elina Svitolina convincingly won her first round duel against Australian Taylah Preston. The Ukrainian beat her opponent 6-2, 6-2.

Svitolina had two aces, without committing a double fault. Preston also had two aces, but committed five double faults.

Despite 60% success on the first serve, or 2% less than Preston, Svitolina dominated in terms of points won on the first serve, with 72%, compared to a low 48% for the Australian.

Viktoriya Tomova will be Svitolina’s opponent in the second round.

For her part, reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova lost her opening match 6-1, 6-2 against Dayana Yastremska.

Vondrousova committed seven double faults during the match. His opponent took advantage of five of his 10 break points.

Ons Jabeur, seeded fifth, and Caroline Garcia, 16e seeded, will play at the end of the program to conclude Monday evening in Australia.

Jabeur will play Yulia Starodubtsewa and Garcia will meet Naomi Osaka, who is back on the WTA circuit after an absence to give birth to her first child. Osaka has won four major tournaments, including two titles in Australia.
