(Melbourne) Canadian Stacey Fung was eliminated 6-1, 6-4 in qualifying for the Australian Open on Monday against Julia Riera of Argentina.
Riera finished the match with two aces and two double faults.
For her part, the Vancouver player did not make an ace or a double fault.
Riera committed 30 unforced errors, five more than his opponent.
Riera broke Fung’s serve five times. Fung won two games on return of serve.
Ontario’s Carol Zhao advanced to the next round of qualifying following a 6-3, 7-6 (7) victory over Valeria Savinykh.
Zhao won his duel in one hour 55 minutes. She made 14 winning shots, against 22 unforced errors.
The Ontarian committed four double faults. Savinykh hit 29 winners and 48 unforced errors.
Zhao broke his opponent seven times, while Savinykh did so three times.
Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo prevailed 7-6 (3), 6-1 against Pablo Llamas Ruiz of Spain.
Toronto’s Katherine Sebov will cross swords with Emiliana Arango and Vancouver’s Rebecca Marino will play against Ya Yi Yang.
