(Melbourne) Ontario’s Bianca Andreescu won her Australian Open opener with a straight-set 6-2, 6-4 win over Czech Marie Bouzkova.
It was a return to Melbourne for Andreescu, who missed last year’s tournament.
The Canadian needed just an hour and 41 minutes to overcome the 24-year-old from Prague, who was 25e first in the series.
Andreescu won 74% of the points on his first serve, compared to 60% for his opponent.
Andreescu didn’t score an ace, but didn’t double fault.
Among the other Canadians in action in Melbourne, Denis Shapovalov faced Serbian Dusan Lajovic just after Andreescu’s duel, while Rebecca Marino will enter the tournament later in the day.
