The place on the bench of the French champions is now taken. Australian coach Joe Montemurro has been appointed new coach of Olympique Lyonnais, the club announced in a press release shared on Wednesday June 19. Joe Montemurro, who signed a two-year contract, succeeds Sonia Bompastor, who left for Chelsea after three years on the Lyon bench. He becomes the first foreign coach in the history of the eight-time European champions.
“I am extremely honored to be part of such an exceptional organization as Olympique Lyonnais, the world leader in women’s football. When I think of Lyon, I think of high level professionalism and excellence.”he said in the club press release.
Joe Montemurro was dismissed by surprise last March by Juventus, where he arrived in the summer of 2021 and where he extended his contract until 2026, when his players had just been eliminated in the semi-finals Italian Cup. In two and a half seasons on the Italian bench, he won a national title, two Italian Cups and two Italian Super Cups, and coached several French players (Pauline Peyraud-Magnin, Ella Palis, Estelle Cascarino, Maëlle Garbino.. .). He also faced OL in the quarter-final of the Champions League during his first season in Italy (4-3 aggregate victory for Lyon). In Lyon, the Australian will also reunite with midfielder Daniëlle van de Donk, whom he coached during his time at Arsenal (2017-2021).
