An Australian animated comedy, Memoir of a Snail, appreciated for its dark humor, won the highest award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on Saturday June 15. The Savoyard festival, one of the most important events in the sector, awarded its Feature Film Crystal to this film by Adam Elliot, presented in its world premiere.

Memoir of a Snail (Memoirs of a Snail) is filmed in “stop motion” like other classics of the same genre, such as The strange Christmas of Mr. Jack Or Funeral rites by Tim Burton. It tells of the passion for snails of a young Australian who never knew her mother and found herself separated from her paraplegic father, who died, and from her brother, placed in a family other than her.

The jury prize and the audience prize for a feature film were awarded to a Franco-Belgian-Latvian film, Flow by Gints Zilbalodis, screened at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un certain regard selection. It features a cat on a submerged planet Earth.

Sophie Roze, with the short film A guitar in the sea, won both the Cristal and the Audience Award for a TV film. In a press release, the festival welcomed record attendance with, in one week, 17,400 festival-goers from 103 countries.
