Auger-Aliassime advances to the 3rd round at Roland-Garros

Félix Auger-Aliassime made short work of Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli on Wednesday, defeating him 6-0, 6-3 and 6-4 in the second round of the French Open tennis tournament.

Auger-Aliassime, the ninth seed in the tournament, took just two hours and 15 minutes to overcome his opponent, ranked 155th in the world, on clay in Paris. It was the first career game between the two men.

The Quebecer dominated Ugo Carabelli all along the line; he had eight aces, to zero, and converted five of his 10 break points against him. In comparison, the 22-year-old player from the qualifications could not break Auger-Aliassime in five opportunities and he managed only six winners, against 41 for the representative of the maple leaf.

Auger-Aliassime will face in the third round the winner of the duel between Croatian Borna Gojo and Serbian Filip Krajinovic, which will take place later today. It is the first time that the 21-year-old tennis player has reached the first career round at Roland-Garros, after being ousted from the start in 2020 and 2021.

On the women’s side, Quebec’s Leylah Annie Fernandez, 17th seed of the tournament, will play her second round match later today against Czech Katerina Siniakova.

Her compatriot, Ontario’s Bianca Andreescu, will meet in the second round with Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, the 19th seed in the competition.

This is the second career match between Andreescu and Bencic, with the Canadian winning 7-6(3), 7-5 in the 2019 Open tennis semifinals en route to winning the US major title .
