Atwater Station | Two users spray themselves with cayenne pepper, several metro stations evacuated

An altercation between two metro users who sprayed each other with cayenne pepper in the Atwater station led to the evacuation of several metro stations on Sunday evening.

The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) confirmed that it intervened following this incident, but the two suspects were no longer on the scene when the officers arrived. No arrests have been made at this time.

Surveillance camera recordings will be checked in order to trace them, said SPVM spokeswoman Caroline Chèvrefils.

“It is necessary to interrupt the service on the neighboring sections and to evacuate several stations within a certain radius of the incident to allow the emergency ventilation of the tunnels and stations, in accordance with our protocols in force”, had informed. the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), by email.

Service finally resumed around 7:45 p.m.

Other Incidents

This is at least the third incident of its kind to occur since the beginning of the year in the Montreal metro.

In early January, two separate events including the presence of irritating gases occurred on the same day, forcing the shutdown of complete lines and the evacuation of passengers.

The SPVM has launched an investigation to identify the suspect or suspects who could still face charges of public mischief.
