More Quebecers visited Quebec museums in 2022, but as in several cultural sectors, the numbers still do not reach the pre-pandemic level.
Last year, Quebec museums recorded 10.6 million visits, which represents an increase of 57% compared to 6.8 million in 2021, according to new figures revealed Monday by the Institute of Statistics of Quebec ( ISQ). However, remember that some museums were temporarily closed due to the rise in COVID-19 cases.
We are still far from the average visits between 2015 and 2019, which stood at 15.2 million entries.
The ISQ notes, however, that the gap between 2022 and this pre-pandemic average has narrowed from month to month and represented only 1% in December.
The institute also noticed a spectacular 240% increase in school visits to establishments, which increased from around 173,000 in 2021 to nearly 590,000 in 2022.
Science museums are also the only ones to post figures higher than the pre-pandemic level in 2022, with just over 3.5 million visitors compared to 3.4 million a few years earlier.
Across the province, it is the regions of Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Bas-Saint-Laurent that display figures closest to the 2015-2019 average.
