The 22-year-old faces seven counts in his first case, the most serious of which is the charge of attempted murder by firearm against Constable Vig. The story made headlines in January 2021, as an uneducated citizen, Mamadi Camara, was unjustly accused of this crime, before being released and cleared in full a few days later.

Fifteen months later, Crown prosecutor M.and Katerine Brabant filed a direct indictment last Friday before Judge Eliane Perreault. By doing so, the defense can no longer ask for a preliminary inquiry. The prosecutor has indicated that she is ready to set a trial date.

The defense is however awaiting the preparation of a new expert report on the fitness of the accused. The mental state of the accused is likely to be at the heart of this case. Recall that Ali Ngarukiye had finally been declared fit to appear last February. Another psychiatric report concluded that he was also not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder.

Ali Ngarukiye is also accused of having murdered a fellow prisoner, while he was in protective custody following his arrest in Toronto. André Lapierre, the victim, was found dead in the cell he shared alone with Ali Ngarukiye.

No trial date has been set in this second case.
