The woman who was violently attacked on Monday in a Chicoutimi hotel finally succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday afternoon.
Her partner, Eric Latour, was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated assault. Since the woman has since died, the charges could be amended to include a count of homicide or murder.
Eve Chachai, an Atikamekw mother and grandmother from the Opitciwan community, was found unconscious and in critical condition on the night of Sunday to Monday at the Le Montagnais hotel in Chicoutimi. She was between life and death and finally succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, confirmed Saguenay police spokesperson Hervé Berghella.
Eric Latour appeared in court Monday afternoon. He remains in custody and is due back in court Friday for his bail hearing. The 44-year-old has a very extensive criminal record.
On its Facebook page, the Atikamekw Council of Opitciwan said it learned with dismay and deep sadness what happened to one of the community members.
“Violence in all its forms, particularly against women, is a scourge that must be denounced and eradicated,” the council added.
“Our women and girls must never hesitate to ask for help, to use existing resources, in communities as well as in urban areas, that can help them. They are not alone. Never,” declared Nadia Robertson, spokesperson for the Council of Women of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador (AFNQL).
