In a climate of high tension and renewed violence linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, one person was killed and two others injured by bullets on the evening of Thursday, March 9 in Tel Aviv. The shootings took place on Dizengoff Avenue, popular with night owls, in the center of the city – where a Palestinian attack killed three people in April 2022 -. The Israeli authorities have denounced a “terrorist attack”. The author, aged 23 and a member of the armed wing of the Islamist movement Hamas, was shot dead by police shortly after the attack.
“Serious attack in Tel Aviv […] I congratulate the policeman who, in a courageous act, eliminated the heinous terrorist and saved many lives”, Interior Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said, according to a statement released by his office. Without claiming responsibility for the attack, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad issued a blatant statement in the“Tel Aviv operation […] a natural response to the crimes of the occupation”.
France condemns “with the greatest firmness” this attack
In a press release from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, France condemned “with the greatest firmness” this attack.
Since the beginning of the year, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has claimed the lives of 76 Palestinians (including members of armed groups and civilians, including minors), 12 civilians (including three minors) and one Israeli policeman, as well than a Ukrainian, according to an AFP tally compiled from official Israeli and Palestinian sources.
