(Sydney) Canada advanced to the semi-finals of the ATP Cup tennis thanks to their triumph over team Germany in the final round robin match Thursday in Sydney, Australia.
Denis Shapovalov started the day by defeating Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets of 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3. Félix Auger-Aliassime added the exclamation point as he defeated Alexander Zverev 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 for his first career victory over a top-5 ranked player.
With those two wins, Canada was sure to finish first in Group C, even in the event of a loss in the doubles final against Germany, because earlier on Thursday Great Britain had defeated the United States.
Canada and Great Britain completed the group stage with identical 2-1 records but the tiebreaker favors the Canadians with their victory over the British earlier this week.
In the semifinals, Canada will face Russia, defending champion and winner in Group B.
