Athens covered in dust from Sahara sands

Athens was covered in thick clouds of dust from North Africa on Thursday. These clouds, causing a blocked and yellowish horizon, surrounded the Parthenon and the other monuments of the Greek capital.

The National Observatory in Athens said the dust concentration was particularly high on Thursday and would remain so until Friday. The dust clouds, which arrived on Tuesday, also cover several cities and islands across the country.

These clouds are a mixture of sand and dust from the Saharan desert. They are blown by strong winds and can travel great distances, covering the atmosphere with an orange or reddish film.
