The Sud de Grenoble hospital is saturated due to ski accidents. The situation is “catastrophic”denounces the head of the emergency department Jean-Jacques Banihachémi, guest of France Bleu Isère on Monday January 20. “We have between 80 and 100 patients a day.says the doctor. The problem concerns the reception of patients, the fact of being able to hospitalize them and especially to operate on them afterwards. For example, just on Sunday, we had to transfer patients to Lyon for fractures that required surgery. There was no more space on Grenoble territory, it’s something catastrophic.”

The ski resorts are full during these holidays but because of the mild temperatures, the snow becomes heavy and injuries multiply on the slopes. Jean-Jacques Banihachémi believes that this season, “What is quite impressive is the number of femoral neck fractures in young people. And it’s extremely serious, because these are relatively heavy surgeries. We also have a lot of knee fractures and leg fractures on the rise. As far as the upper limbs are concerned, shoulder and wrist fractures predominate.”

“The number of accidents is proportional to attendance. And as attendance is record this year, it is felt at home in terms of emergencies, with the number of injured of course.”

The head of emergencies recommends wearing a helmet and being in good physical condition: “Beware of fatigue, accidents happen at the end of the day. Then, you have to pay attention to your speed, it is a very important factor in accidentology. And finally, you have to know a minimum of the mountain code , how to ski and what priorities to give on the slopes.”
