“At the same time”, by Kerven and Delépine, a politically incorrect, surreal and hilarious pamphlet

Tenth feature film by Gustave Kerven and Benoît Delépine, At the same time, which takes up Emmanuel Macron’s credo, hits screens on Wednesday April 6, four days before the first round of the presidential election. A good timing that serves as a “provoc” whose very Belgian tone reconnects with the absurd and the surrealism of the country of Magritte.

A right-wing mayor and his environmental opponent clash over the vote to transform a primary forest into a leisure park. They meet at a dinner party, where the first gets his adversary drunk and invites him to a hostess bar where a feminist infiltrator literally sticks them to each other with a product they can’t get rid of. Begins a long night, one fixed behind the other, in search of a solution to separate from this “uncomfortable” situation.

On an improbable plot, Kerven and Delépine concoct a little gem in the “beast and mean” tradition of Hara-kiri, the mythical satirical magazine of the 70s. A humor where we also find a very fashionable Belgian look in France and refreshing, which allows a relevant perspective on ourselves. In any case, whether these mayors are Belgian, French or elsewhere hardly matters. Vincent Macaigne and Jonathan Cohen reveal themselves on the same wavelength in an offbeat and irresistible odyssey to the end of the night.

Jonathan Cohen as uninhibited right-wing mayor in At the same timeconfirms himself from film to film as the major comedy actor of French cinema, in the casualness and accuracy he demonstrates: terrible jungle, simply black, Enormous…Vincent Macaigne is more eclectic, since he passes with ease from a crazy comedy, like Dogto the drama in night doctor, for which he was nominated for the César. The duo is on the small onions.

Some will find the situation vulgar, but isn’t it the nature of satire to choose triviality to magnify the line, and isn’t humor the result of all transgressions, then that we muzzle it more and more in political correctness? We can count on Gustave Kerven and Benoît Delépine not to stay in the nails and to heckle us happily. An epic journey, even if it is a bit long, grotesque and preposterous. What fun.
