In 2023, the Bayonne festivities were marred by the murder of Patrice Laniès, beaten to death by partygoers.
The murder of Patrice Laniès, which occurred in July 2023, marked the Bayonne festivities (Pyrénées-Atlantiques). The man had been beaten to death after a simple remark to a partygoer who was urinating on his door. A fatal punch and late emergency services are at the heart of the case. That evening, Patrice Laniès had gone out to buy an ice cream. When he returned, he came across a group of shirtless men and one of them defecated on his landing.
Patrice Laniès allegedly put his hand on his shoulder and made a remark to him before being attacked. He received a hook in the face, lost consciousness and died nine days later from his injuries. Investigators found suspects a few weeks later. The young men were charged with murder or failure to report a crime. Some admitted their presence at the scene of the crime, but none admitted to being the perpetrator. Patrice’s family denounced the out-of-control Bayonne festivities, as well as the organization of the emergency services.
