At the heart of a submerged volcano, the Montpeloux festival in Puy-de-Dôme brings culture and nature together

Like every summer in Saillant, to the east Puy-de-Domethe Montpeloux festival installs its floating stage in a submerged volcanic cavity and offers a show to discover outdoors every Thursday evening until August 25th.

A lake with emerald reflections nestled in the heart of a volcanic crater. This exceptional panorama can be discovered in the small town of Saillant (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). A majestic setting that has hosted the intimate Montpeloux volcano festival and its floating stage every summer since 2006. The idea came to create this event to highlight this place. It was necessary to arrange the place to embellish itspecifies Jérôme Bru, head of the festival.

Former mining operation stopped in 1990 and long left as an industrial wasteland, the lake now hosts a vast cultural program. Every Thursday evening until August 25, the festival offers a show to discover in this natural setting. Thus, the curious will be able to benefit from the texts of Jean Giono extracted from The man who planted trees, read by actor Laurent Chouteau and set to music by a trio of classical instrumentalists. But also a performance by the contemporary dance company Muwho appropriates places at dusk to present his show Reverbs.

The atmosphere of this open-air stage, facing the rock walls made up of basalt columns more than 70 meters high, does not leave the public indifferent. The setting is great, we come very often and the festival is always very interesting for all audiences”, adds a spectator. But if the annual event can continue to amaze young and old alike, it’s thanks to its team of loyal volunteers who work behind the scenes. New applications are welcome to lend a hand for just one evening and continue to bring the magic of the volcano festival to life.
