Faced with a new upsurge in contamination in France (10,000 new cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours), the government has announced that the mask will be compulsory again at school from Monday, November 8. A measure that concerns 39 departments where the incidence rate is high. The requirement to wear a mask at school was lifted in most territories by October.
The final map with the departments concerned will be published on November 4. But already, the main union of school teachers regrets the “yoyo effect”. “We take off the mask, then put it back on”, regrets Guislaine David, spokesperson for the SNUIPP-FSU union. “This creates insecurity and in the long term we will have a relaxation of barrier gestures and this wearing of the mask because we no longer know when to put it on or take it off”.
But for the virologist Christine Rouzioux, it is necessary to adapt to the evolution of the epidemic. “The virus returns with winter which promotes respiratory infections. Children should therefore be reminded to wash their hands and wear the mask”, considers the professor also a member of the academies of medicine and pharmacy. Both teachers and doctors are calling for class ventilation and regular screening of students.
