At least eight injured in knife attacks in north-west England

At least eight people, including children, were injured in knife attacks in northwest England on Monday, emergency services said. Police said they arrested one man and seized a knife.

Merseyside Police said officers were called to an address in Southport, near Liverpool, around midday.

She reported a “major incident” but said there was no wider threat to the public. She asked people to avoid the area.

Photos showed several police cars, ambulances and a fire truck behind a perimeter on a residential street.

North West Ambulance Service said its staff treated eight people with stab wounds.

The injured were taken to local hospitals.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said on social media that she was “deeply concerned by this very serious incident”.
