A collision between a bus and a truck left at least 25 dead in the state of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil, state firefighters announced Monday, January 8. The accident occurred on a highway near the town of Gaviao, about 250 kilometers from Salvador, the capital of the Brazilian state.
Five people were also injured in the accident which occurred overnight from Sunday to Monday, according to the Brazilian press. After the intervention of the emergency services, the bodies of the deceased people were handed over to the scientific police for identification and legal procedures, according to the police.
The cause of the accident is not yet known. The white cabin of the truck involved, which was transporting mangoes, was completely twisted by the impact, according to images published by the local press. The town hall of Jacobina, a town near the accident, declared three days of mourning on Monday and is preparing a “collective vigil” for the victims.
