Another deadly explosion in the heart of Afghanistan. At least 21 people were killed and 33 injured in a bomb attack on a mosque in Kabul on Wednesday August 17, according to a police report given Thursday.
The explosion, which took place “during evening prayer” according to the Kabul police spokesman, “was caused by explosives placed in the mosque” Sunni Sediqia, in the northwest of the capital. The Italian NGO Emergency, which operates in a hospital in Kabul, announced that it had received a total of 35 people after the explosion, including nine children. Three of the injured died.
On Twitter (in English)the UN mission in Afghanistan (Minua) has “deplored” the attack, “the latest in a worrying series of bombings that have killed and injured more than 250 people in recent weeks, the highest monthly civilian casualty toll for a year”. The number of attacks has decreased in Afghanistan since the Taliban took power a year ago, but they have not stopped, most of them being claimed by the jihadist group Islamic State (IS).
Taliban Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada condemned the attacks in a very rare appearance on Thursday. The official also said that the Taliban were “ready to fight one more time” against the United States to obtain the right to apply their strict interpretation of Sharia, one year after the return of the Taliban to power.
