At least 14 pro-regime fighters were killed by jihadists from the Islamic State (IS) group during an attack on a military bus in the desert in Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH) announced on Tuesday, January 9. ). The NGO mentioned “a bloody attack” which also left people injured near the province of Homs, in the center of the country

According to the NGO, this is the second attack perpetrated by ISIS against regime forces in January. On January 1, nine Syrian government soldiers and militia members were killed in an attack by the group on military posts in the eastern desert.

ISIS has intensified its attacks against Syrian regime forces

ISIS has recently intensified its attacks in Syria against troops of the Syrian regime forces, particularly from the desert where its fighters retreated after the loss in 2019 of the vast territories it controlled in this country. In June 2014, IS jihadists established a self-proclaimed caliphate in a vast region straddling Iraq and Syria.

An international coalition, led by the United States, fought the organization until the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), dominated by the Kurds, seized the last stronghold of the IS in March 2019, in Baghouz. This marked the territorial defeat of the group.
