A shooter killed at least 10 people and injured many others in a university building in Prague (Czech Republic), Thursday, December 21, according to an initial emergency report on X (ex-Twitter). “For now, I can say that there are 11 dead at the scene, including the shooter”confirmed Jana Postova, spokesperson for the emergency services, on Czech public television.

Emergency services also reported nine serious injuries, “5-6 moderately seriously injured and up to 10 lightly injured”specifying that this first assessment was provisional.

“The shooter has been eliminated”announces the Czech police onadding that the location of the killing “is currently evacuated”. Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan told public television that the presence of “no other shooter” had not been “confirmed”and called on the population to follow the instructions of the police.

France expresses its “solidarity”

The killing took place in a building located on Jan Palach Square, a square in downtown Prague, close to the tourist heart of the Czech capital. Czech television channel Nova TV reported an explosion and a shooter on the roof of the building, before the assailant’s death was announced. The teachers and students present were ordered to lock themselves in while the police intervened.

“I am shocked by these events”reacted on the Czech President, Petr Pavel, who was visiting Paris. “I spoke with Czech President Pavel, and I express to him personally, on behalf of my government, and I have no doubt, on behalf of all of us, my support and solidarity”declared French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne to the National Assembly.
