For four weeks, bronchiolitis has raged in France in the youngest. In Bordeaux, an advanced medical post is now deployed outside the children’s hospital to better manage the situation.

For three weeks, the pediatric emergency department of Bordeaux University Hospital (Gironde) has recorded up to 190 passages per day, an increase of nearly 50%, with a majority of children presenting with respiratory disorders. “On the peaks at 190, we had a six hour wait”, confides Dr. Brigitte Llanas, head of the pediatric center of the CHU.

To avoid cross-contamination, a consultation box has been installed at the entrance to the emergency room. It will be reserved for children “which will not present any sign of gravity”, specifies Dr. Marion Bailhache, head of pediatric emergencies at the CHU, “to allow them not to stay too long in the waiting room”. This device aims to anticipate the influx of patients with bronchiolitis. The epidemic “arrives a little earlier than in previous years” and is “a little bit stronger”, notes Prof. Olivier Brissaud, responsible for pediatric resuscitation.
