Associations fighting against domestic violence demonstrated on Saturday July 16 in New Caledonia to demand a “emergency plan” after the death of a 35-year-old woman beaten by her companion. About fifty people were gathered in the morning in front of the Nouméa court.

The mother of two was admitted to hospital on Wednesday with a serious head injury. She finally succumbed to the blows inflicted by her partner during an argument at the family home. The suspect was placed in pre-trial detention and indicted on the count of homicide by partner, according to the Noumea prosecutor’s office.

“There is a rather deafening silence on the part of the institutions. We are asking for an emergency plan so that this cause is taken head on and becomes a priority, with the necessary means”, claimed Fara Caillard, spokesperson for the collective Femmes anger, at the origin of the demonstration. In New Caledonia, domestic violence is more than twice as numerous as in mainland France.
