Associations fighting against domestic violence demonstrated on Saturday July 16 in New Caledonia to demand a “emergency plan” following the death of a 35-year-old woman beaten by her companion.
About fifty people were gathered Saturday morning in front of the Nouméa court, after the announcement, the day before, of the death of this woman at the territorial hospital where she had been admitted on Wednesday for a serious head injury. This mother of two succumbed to beatings inflicted by her partner during an argument at the family home in Nouméa. The suspect was placed in pre-trial detention and indicted on the count of homicide by concubine, indicated the parquet floor of Nouméa.
“There is a rather deafening silence on the part of the institutions. We are asking for an emergency plan so that this cause is taken head on and becomes a priority, with the necessary means”, claimed Fara Caillard, spokesperson for the collective “Femmes à anger”, at the origin of the demonstration. In New Caledonia, domestic violence is more than twice as numerous as the French average.
