The upward trend in COVID-19 cases is accelerating in Quebec. In the past 24 hours, 1,037 people have discovered that they have been infected. This is the first time since the beginning of May that so many cases have been reported for a day.
The 1,037 new cases reported on Friday bring the seven-day daily average to 819. The trend is thus up by 26% over one week. You have to go back to 1er last May to find such a high case toll. The number of cases had not increased as much in September as Quebec was affected by the fourth wave.
Despite this high number of cases, however, no death has increased the toll. The daily average remains at three, the trend being stable over one week.
The recent surge in cases has not manifested in hospitals either. The number of hospitalizations is down slightly. There are currently 206 people hospitalized, four less than the day before. Of these, 43 are in intensive care.
Note, the Ministry of Health has also added 1,302 cases of people infected in the Montreal area, but which had been omitted so far. “This catch-up extends over several months, the oldest case dating back to March 19, 2020 and the most recent, to November 2021,” says the MSSS.
Thus, a total of 444,585 cases have been detected in Quebec since the start of the pandemic.
The pace of the vaccination campaign continued to increase with the arrival of the 5 to 11 year olds. Thus, 19,463 doses were administered on Thursday. To date, 13.8 million doses have been administered in Quebec since mid-December 2020.
