(Washington) The parliamentary committee investigating the assault on Capitol Hill on January 6 by supporters of Donald Trump on Monday issued five new subpoenas for relatives of the former president.
The new list features Roger Stone, a longtime friend of Donald Trump, and Alex Jones, a famous American far-right conspirator, both directly involved in the January 6 rally where the former Republican president addressed thousands of supporters, baselessly hammering that the election had been “stolen” from him.
The parliamentary investigation “seeks information on the rallies and the march which followed towards the Capitol, and which degenerated with the assault of the Capitol by a violent crowd”, explained in a statement the elected Democrat Bennie Thompson, president of the commission.
“We need to know who organized, prepared, paid for and received funds in connection with these events and what types of communications the organizers had with officials from the White House and Congress,” he added.
Five people died during or shortly after the attack on Congress, including a police officer and a female protester killed by an officer inside the building.
According to the parliamentary committee of the lower house, Roger Stone was to speak on stage that day.
Sentenced for “perjury” as part of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, Mr. Stone, former political adviser to Donald Trump, was pardoned by the Republican billionaire just before he left. the power.
Alex Jones, founder of the far-right site “Infowars”, for his part, would have participated in the organization of the rally on January 6 and seemed to know the plans of Donald Trump vis-à-vis the demonstration, underlines the commission in the communicated.
Composed of a large majority of elected Democrats, the special committee of the House of Representatives has already interviewed more than 150 people and is seeking to publish its findings before the mid-term elections, in a year. Republicans are indeed well placed to regain control of the lower house in this election, which would allow them to bury its work.
So far the former advisers of Donald Trump have not responded to the summons. Steve Bannon, considered one of the architects of his victory in 2016, even “refused to cooperate”, so he was charged with “obstructing the work of Congress”. He has pleaded “not guilty” and faces between 30 days and one year in prison for each count.
