Monday, February 14 will open the trial of the attack in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray (Seine-Maritime) which cost the life of Father Jacques Hamel. On July 26, 2016, the 86-year-old cleric was murdered in his church. The trauma goes far beyond his religious community and rekindles emotion throughout the village.

Despite the passing years, the sacristans of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray (Seine-Maritime) still carry in their hearts Father Hamel, assassinated in 2016. Every day, they open his church and then gather for a few moments. “He was our brother, he was our friend, he was our priest, how can we forget?”, declares Sébastien Velardita, sacristan of the church of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray. He was attentive and discreet according to his followers.

On July 26, 2016, two terrorists entered the church, cut his throat during mass and seriously stabbed a parishioner. The assassins were killed but three alleged accomplices will be tried from next Monday at the Paris Assize Court. The inhabitants say they are still marked by the violent death of their priest. Jacques Simon, the new priest, will organize speaking times because the trial awakens a trauma for the inhabitants.
