As the toll from the earthquake that struck northern Turkey and Syria continues to grow, Charlie Hebdo’s new coverage has shocked many French people. And for good reason, on the front page of his newspaper on Monday February 6, 2023, a drawing representing the unfortunate damage caused by the earthquake was represented. “Not even need to send tanks”, could we read on the caricature, in direct connection with the war in Ukraine.
A cover that was the subject of a lively debate on the set of “Touche pas à mon poste” this Thursday, February 9, 2023. Indeed, if several columnists have made it known that they were not against by advocating freedom of expression like Géraldine Maillet, Jean-Michel Maire or even Valérie Benaïm, other columnists around the table were deeply shocked by this coverage.
“The most serious thing is that it does not denounce anything and it comes out at the same time as all the horrible images that we have just seen. It disgusts me, I am no longer Charlie! I am no longer Charlie at all!”, said Danielle Moreau
Same story for Guillaume Genton who spoke just after: “It’s heartbreaking and I’m tired of using the Charlie spirit as an excuse to accept the worst crap. There’s no respect for the victims, it’s a tragedy that is recent… There, we broadcast the front page, there is no one in the public who found it funny“.
