After 15 games without defeat in the league, Liverpool have fallen. The Reds were beaten by a more enterprising Arsenal team (3-1), Sunday February 4 during the 23rd day of the Premier League. They remain leaders, but the threat from the Gunners and Manchester City is becoming more and more precise.

Arsenal struck first, through Bukayo Saka (14th), opportunistic on a counter-attack. Liverpool equalized thanks to a mix-up, leading Gabriel Magalhaes to score against his side (45th + 3)… before cracking again on a defensive error.

Following a misunderstanding between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, Gabriel Martinelli sealed the London victory (67th). Leandro Trossard worsened the score (90th + 2), taking advantage of a new error from the Brazilian goalkeeper. Liverpool were then playing with ten men, after the red card received by French international Ibrahima Konaté (87th).

Arsenal does City’s business

A rather logical outcome, as the Reds only had one shot on target in the match. THE expected goals (a statistic which measures the dangerousness of a team’s shots) are even more telling: Arsenal accumulated 3.4 compared to only 0.4 for Jürgen Klopp’s players.

With this victory, the Gunners are back on track with Liverpool, still in the lead, but with only two points ahead. This result could especially benefit Manchester City, five points behind the Reds with two games in hand. The returning Kevin De Bruyne and his teammates could make up part of their deficit against Brentford (15th), Monday at 9 p.m. Before finding the same opponent 15 days later in a late match, to try to regain the lead.
