Arrogance has a price | The duty

Integration and good understanding between the various Quebec and Canadian communities imply respect for each other, despite differences of opinion. Arrogance has no place. I congratulate the Legault government for having called for the resignation, if not the dismissal, of Mr.me Amira Elghawaby from her position as Canada’s first Special Representative for the fight against Islamophobia. The remarks, once well assumed, of this person were imbued with prejudice and racism against Quebecers. Her recent “clarifications” and lack of apologies show an unusual arrogance that renders her unfit to assume her duties.

We would have preferred that Prime Minister Legault attend the commemorations held last Sunday following the unspeakable massacre that overwhelmed the Islamic community of Quebec. Such an event, bringing together several political leaders, should be an opportunity to express compassion for the victims, their families and their community, and to denounce all forms of racism and violence, all in a spirit of solidarity. Mr. Boufeldja Benabdallah, co-founder of the Islamic Center of Quebec, instead took the opportunity to publicly challenge, in full commemoration, our Deputy Prime Minister to criticize the absence of our Prime Minister: “Speak to François Legault to tell him: “You should have come, you must not fear us.” »

Faced with so much arrogance and lack of judgment, should we be surprised if Prime Minister Legault again delegates a representative of his government next year to attend this commemoration? There would be no need, in my opinion, to justify his absence. The holding of a commemoration should not serve as an improvised political arena.
