A 21-year-old Frenchman, wanted by the United States for his alleged involvement in a cybercrime case against American companies in particular, was arrested and imprisoned in Morocco, Moroccan police explained to AFP on Friday July 29, confirming a information from The Obs.
Sébastien Raoult, a computer science student from the Vosges, was arrested on May 31 at Rabat-Salé airport when he was the subject of a red notice issued by Interpol at the request of American justice, within the framework of a case of cyberpiracy, according to the Moroccan police.
According The Obs, the FBI suspects him of belonging to a group of hackers, the “ShinyHunters”, a reference to the Pokémon universe. The members of this group are accused of being “prolific cybercriminals” by US authorities.
The latter are demanding the extradition of Sébastien Raoult for acts of “conspiracy to commit electronic fraud and abuse”, “electronic fraud” and “serious identity theft”, still according to The Obs. Sébastien Raoult would risk a sentence of 116 years in prison in the United States for the facts attributed to him.
“He only stayed in France and Morocco. If there was piracy, it was from France. The natural judge is the French judge”told AFP his lawyer, Me Philippe Ohayon, who is asking that his client be extradited to France and not to the United States.
