Arrest in Montreal of a man suspected of terrorism

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested an 18-year-old young man, Amine Assal, of Ville Saint-Laurent, Montreal, Thursday morning, on suspicion of terrorist activities.

The arrest was made to protect public safety and “disrupt his suspicious activities,” RCMP said.

A search is also underway at his residence.

The RCMP received information from the FBI and had to act very quickly, explained Sergeant Charles Poirier.

He is due to appear Thursday afternoon at the Montreal courthouse. He will be ordered to take a peace bond under section 810 of the Criminal Code.

The RCMP will continue their investigation to gather evidence against him, which could lead to the filing of criminal charges.

The RCMP did not want to detail the information it has against Amine Assal.

Further details will follow.
