Yacine Zouaoui, a fugitive who escaped from a minimum security penitentiary in Laval, was arrested in Hungary, the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) reported Thursday.
The 32-year-old man, who was imprisoned for a second-degree murder that occurred in 2011 in British Columbia, was arrested on Tuesday, September 3 in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, thanks to the joint work of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Correctional Service Canada, the Border Services Agency and Interpol.
Mr. Zouaoui escaped on May 24 from the Federal Training Center, a minimum-security detention facility on Montée Saint-François in Laval. He was then placed on the list of the 10 most wanted criminals in Quebec.
“An extradition procedure is currently underway in order to bring him back to the country, with the aim [qu’il] can be brought to justice as quickly as possible,” the SQ said in a press release.
Authorities initially said the man might be in Ontario.
