Arrest by mistake | Montreal and Mamadi Camara reach an amicable agreement

(Montreal) The law firm representing Mamadi Camara, the citizen who was mistakenly arrested by Montreal police in January 2021 after a police officer was assaulted, announces Wednesday that a settlement agreement has been reached between the victim, his relatives and the City of Montreal.

Mr. Camara sued the City of Montreal and the Attorney General of Quebec for faults committed by police officers of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) and by criminal and penal prosecuting attorneys.

The law firm Arsenault Dufresne Wee says the agreement puts an end to the legal process. This agreement only mentions the City of Montreal.

Mamadi Camara was arrested on January 28, 2021 for attempted murder. Pulling him out of his car through the window and restraining him on the ground, he was injured in the cheek.

He was then placed in pre-trial detention for six days, but on February 5, the SPVM announced that Mr. Camara had been exonerated and that the charges against him were entirely withdrawn, two days after the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP ) has filed a stay of proceedings.

On February 8, the director of the SPVM, Sylvain Caron, met with Mr. Camara and his family to apologize to them on behalf of the SPVM.

Law firm Arsenault Dufresne Wee reports that Mamadi Camara does not wish to disclose the amount of the settlement and will not comment further. Nevertheless, he makes it known that he and his relatives are satisfied since the agreement allows them to close the legal process.

Mamadi Camara also thanks the Quebec population for the support shown to him, which was, he adds, an important source of comfort for him and his loved ones.
