Around thirty cities plan to increase the tax on registration

The registration tax could increase in around thirty cities in Quebec in the coming months.

The information was made public Wednesday by the Société de l’assurance-automobile du Québec (SAAQ), which must process requests from interested cities. They had until March 15 to come forward. However, their municipal councils or MRC authorities will have to adopt regulations to this effect by May 31 to formalize the process.

Remember that last December, the Legault government gave cities the power to increase the registration tax on their territory in order to better finance public transport.

The SAAQ, however, did not want to make public the list of cities concerned, as asked on Wednesday by MP Étienne Grandmont, of Québec solidaire.

Cities in the greater Montreal region have already informed the Minister of Transport, Geneviève Guilbault, that they intend to use this lever to make up for the deficits of their public transport companies.
