An Irish army chaplain was stabbed and wounded by a teenager who attacked him outside a barracks in Galway, in the west of Ireland, police said on Friday (August 16).
This “A man in his fifties was stabbed several times during the incident” which took place on Thursday evening, according to a police statement. The victim, who suffers from “serious injuries” but whose life is not in danger, was taken to hospital.
An Irish teenager, whose age has not been specified, was overpowered by soldiers, arrested at the scene and taken into custody, police said. “One of the lines of investigation is to determine whether this attack was motivated by terrorism.”she said in a statement.
The army said in a statement that sentries at the barracks fired five warning shots. “in strict compliance with the armed forces protection protocols”. They used a baton to subdue the attacker. Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Micheal Martin condemned the attack on X, praising the soldiers present for their “crucial intervention”.
