The normalization of relations is not imminent. Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other on Tuesday February 13 of having carried out shooting at their common border. “According to initial information, there are two deaths on the Armenian side and wounded”said the Armenian Ministry of Defense. According to the ministry, the shooting took place near Nerkin Hand, a village in the Siounik region, bordering both Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijani enclave of Nakhichevan, the ministry said.

For its part, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry accused in a statement the Armenian forces of having fired twice on its positions on Monday evening “towards the village of Kokhanabi, in the region of Tovouz”u northwest Azerbaijan. The Armenian Defense Ministry rejected the accusations, saying they “do not correspond to reality”.

Two deadly wars

This incident comes shortly after the re-election as head of Azerbaijan of Ilham Aliev, in power for two decades in this hydrocarbon-rich country. The 62-year-old strongman from Baku is accused of wanting to control the Armenian region of Siounik to connect the Nakhchivan enclave to the rest of Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought two wars, in the 1990s and in 2020, which left tens of thousands dead, over the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, finally reconquered in September by the forces of Baku.

Since this complete reconquest, almost the entire Armenian population of the region – more than 100,000 people – has fled to Armenia. Armed incidents still regularly take place at the border.
