On the second day of military escalation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the fragile peace talks are in jeopardy. Armenia on Wednesday (September 14th) accused Azerbaijan of occupying new Armenian territories. “The enemy that has occupied 40 km2 of Armenian land since May now occupies 10 km2 more”denounced the Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan.
At least 105 Armenian soldiers were killed in these clashes, which broke out overnight from Monday to Tuesday, said the head of the Armenian government. For its part, Azerbaijan has announced 50 soldiers killed in its ranks. These clashes are the most intense since the war that occurred in 2020, lost by Armenia, which had killed more than 6,500 people.
Russia, a regional power which considers the Caucasus as its backyard, announced a truce on Tuesday morning, but the two camps were immediately accused of having violated it. The Ministry of Defense Armenian affirmed on Wednesday that Baku “resumed its attacks with artillery, mortars and large-caliber weapons in the directions of Jermuk, Verin Chorja”two Armenian localities near the Azerbaijani border.
The Ministry of Defense Azerbaijani claimed for his part that the Armenian forces had shelled during the night his “positions in Kelbajar and Lachin areas”. Baku also accused Armenian forces of firing howitzers at three Azerbaijani villages. Armenia has denied these accusations.
