In the United States, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that an 1864 law banning almost all abortions was still applicable. Incest and rape will no longer be sufficient reasons to terminate a pregnancy.
The courts of Arizona (United States) are at war against abortion. The highest court of the American state considers that a 160-year-old law, banning almost all abortions, can apply today. The text prohibits abortion from the moment of conception, unless the mother’s life is in danger. Rape or incest are not considered valid exceptions.
The question of abortion at the heart of the American electoral campaign
“This is unqualified legalese that does not take care of the patient. It completely undermines our ability to do our jobs, and it is the patients who will suffer.”, estimates Dr. Jill Gibson, head of the Arizona Family Planning medical service. A decision “extreme” according to Democratic US State Attorney Katie Hobbs, who adds that she “women’s night”.
At the heart of the American electoral campaign, the question of abortion divides even within the Republican camp. Donald Trump, the candidate for the November presidential election, seems to rule out the possibility of a nationwide ban on abortion.
