The Tempe City Council voted unanimously Thursday night to put the project to a referendum in May.

The arena would be part of an entertainment sector.

The city council must approve a development agreement, an amendment to the general plan and a change in zoning, before a vote which could be held on May 16.

The Coyotes negotiated with the city of Tempe to build on land just west of downtown.

The team currently plays at Mullett Arena on the ASU campus. With 5,000 seats, it is by far the smallest arena in the NHL.

The Coyotes have been looking for permanent housing since the City of Glendale pulled out of a lease at the Gila River Arena.

Arizona had an annual lease until Glendale decided it wouldn’t be renewed for the 2022-23 season.
