arizona | Containers placed along the Mexican border to block migrants

(Phoenix) The state of Arizona has started installing shipping containers along another stretch of the US-Mexico border to fill gaps not covered by a border wall.

Republican Gov. Doug Ducey’s decision announced Monday to install stacks of containers in Cochise County, southeastern Arizona, comes two weeks after federal officials told him to remove containers that he had placed along the border in the southwest of his territory.

Mr. Ducey filed a lawsuit Friday in federal court, asking that a court allow the state to keep more than 100 containers stacked two by two and topped with barbed wire near the community of Yuma, which is near from the California border. This also includes US Forest Service lands where the new containers are placed hundreds of miles to the east.

The containers near Yuma were placed in August to fill gaps in the border wall as Mr Ducey stepped up his political posturing against what he called the Biden administration’s inaction to stop migrants entering the State from Mexico.

The new container section targets an area of 16 kilometers from the border. Governor Ducey said more than 2,700 of the 18-meter-long shipping containers would be needed to fill the void.

The border wall promoted by former President Donald Trump remains a potent stake for Republican politicians hoping to show support for border security.

Migrants continued to avoid the barriers recently erected near Yuma by going around them.
