A few days before the Constitutional Council’s decision, several demonstrations were organized on Sunday January 21 against the immigration law. In Paris, the march will start from the Trocadéro, with several artists in the procession such as Marina Foïs, Pierre Arditi, Josiane Balasko… and Ariane Ascaride, in particular in memory of her Italian grandparents.
franceinfo: What does the immigration law inspire you?
Ariane Ascaride: I think France has always been a welcoming land. Besides, that’s how I was taught about my country. And fortunately it was a welcoming land: otherwise I might not be here, since this country welcomed my Italian grandparents when they arrived. I am the pure product of that. Otherwise, I don’t know where I would be, I wouldn’t be talking to you… I thank France for welcoming my grandparents.
And today, tell me that there is, because there are no other words, a national preference towards people who, after all, make this country work! We were very happy, during the Covid crisis, that all these people, who perhaps do not yet have their papers completely in order, were there to make sure things ran smoothly, so that we could clean up. in hospitals, so that there are cashiers in supermarkets, at the risk of their health. For me, there is something wrong. How to tell you ? I am ashamed.
However, this law seems rather popular
You know, we have been able to measure at different times in the history of our country that popular sentiment is not necessarily a correct sentiment. I believe that what is needed is for the left to truly unite to make its voice heard very loudly.
“Even though this law may seem popular, I think there are a lot of people in France who do not agree with this law.”

I hope there will be a lot of people on Sunday. Because it is also the pride of this country to be what we are, all the same. There are very beautiful things in France and we become very small again when we think like that. Fear has never been the way to resolve things. And in all moments of crisis, we work on a feeling of fear. It’s never good.
