are young people the next generation of the union of the left?

In a context of tension within Nupes, the Talk gives voice to young people involved and activists within this left-wing coalition. Ludo Pauchant receives Emma Fourreau, Louis L’Haridon, Mathilde Heriaud, Annah Bikouloulou and the political scientist Benjamin Morel.

For several months, divergences take place between the different parties of the left. In the current context in the Middle East, the leader of France Insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, refused to label Hamas “terrorist” during its attack on Israel. This positioning hit the left coalition hard, with many MPs having strongly condemned the Insoumis’ comments.

Diverging positions depending on the parties in the face of the crisis of the left

Often weakened, following pension reform, riots and now the conflict between Israel and Palestine, the sustainability of Nupes and its future appear to be uncertain. The different parties in the coalition hold different positions regarding this crisis.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s positioning on the context in the Middle East led to the vote for a “moratorium” of the Socialist Party on his participation in the left alliance. In concrete terms, this means that party deputies will no longer participate in Nupes intergroup meetings.

On the PCF side, Fabien Roussel, in the same vein, announced that he no longer sat within the intergroup. However, the deputies of the French Communist Party seem favorable to the left alliance and do not wish to put an end to the Nupes.

For their part, environmentalists have not suspended their participation in weekly intergroup meetings. The environmentalist deputies want to meet “as quickly as possible” the deputies of the alliance, with a view to overcoming differences.

Young people committed to the European elections

While the parties of the left coalition cannot agree on the development of common or competing lists for the 2024 European elections, the Young People of Nupes have decided to raise their voice and prove to their elders that ‘a single left list is possible.

The young rebels, ecologists, socialists and Génération.s published last September a proposal for a common program for the Europeans. The objective: to provide proof that the members of the Nupes can agree on a common action program in Brussels and to weigh against the Renaissance parties and the National Rally by becoming a legitimate majority alternative.
