For eight years, Donetsk, annexed by Russia, has been the scene of fighting. A devastated territory, where many hoped that Russia would manage to pacify the region. This is still not the case, the security situation has even worsened, but a large part of the population continues to support Vladimir Putin all the same.
Donetsk firefighters on alert on February 19. An administrative building was set on fire. The city, controlled by the Russians, was hit in the center by a salvo of rockets. A few hundred meters away, the shots shattered storefronts. One dead and twelve wounded were counted, according to the Russians.
“Putin is not guilty”
Under Ukrainian fire, Donetsk has known war since 2014. But in a neighborhood near the front line, everyone recognizes it: there have been many more shots since the start of the Russian offensive. “We hope everything will be fine and that it will not fall on us, because it’s like roulette”, says a resident. But it is out of the question to blame the Russian offensive. “Putin is not guilty. On the contrary, Putin helps us”said another resident. Many in Donetsk hoped for a quick Russian intervention that would end a conflict that had been going on for years. But the war is getting worse. Westerners are notably accused of supplying weapons.
