The choice of new tires for a vehicle can be motivated by several factors: performance, ride comfort, silence, durability and price, among others. The so-called low rolling resistance models are spreading more and more in the market, especially with the proliferation of electric cars. Less friction means more range.
This is also true for conventional vehicles, mind you. These tires represent an energy-efficient solution and can save tens or even hundreds of dollars in some cases over their entire lifespan.
Some numbers
Various studies, including one from the US Department of Energy, indicate that rolling resistance is responsible for 4-11% of fuel consumption. In addition, a 10% decrease in resistance would result in a reduction of approximately 1% in consumption. For motorists who drive a lot, it can make a big difference.
The magazine Consumer Reports, which evaluates a large number of tire models, reports a 34% discrepancy between the rolling resistance of the best all-season tires and that of the worst. With an average of 20,000 km per year, this difference can represent a fuel saving of 53 litres, or close to $85 using a pump price of $1.60/L. Over five years (usually the maximum life of a tire), that’s $340 more in your pocket!
It should not be assumed that low rolling resistance tires necessarily sacrifice wet or dry grip. Some rank above average, all tires combined. “There are a number of tires that can deliver great bite, long life and low rolling resistance to boot,” says Ryan Pszczolkowski, director of tire evaluations at Consumer Reports.

In closing, remember that traction and braking performance should always be among the first criteria to consider when choosing new tires, because your safety on the road is at stake. However, other aspects such as rolling resistance can tip the scales next.
