The series of product recalls does not stop after the Kinder, Buitoni, or cheese food scandals. So consumers are wondering. Are the checks and monitoring that must be carried out upstream sufficient?

Cheese, salad, scallops… After Buitoni pizzas and Ferrero chocolates, product recalls followed. Should we be worried about it? In Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), consumers are, in any case, more vigilant. “Yes I check“says one consumer.”We can also understand that sometimes there was a problem, but that does not condemn the brand as a whole.“, thinks another.

Product recalls are a common practice in supermarkets, sometimes for sanitary reasons, others for defects. Since March 2021, 4,461 products have been removed from the shelves, mainly due to bacteria. Among these recalls, 160 were for a labeling problem, 45 because of E. coli bacteria. “There are product recalls every day (…) but these are really very important brands, which will therefore affect a very large number of consumers“, comments Karine Sanouillet, consumer expert.

According to the Foodwatch France association, the food controls that must be carried out in industries are fewer and fewer, which leaves “the door open to abuse“.

Non-exhaustive list.
