For the first quarter of 2024, 18% of cars sold in France were electric. But doubts about the cleanliness of these vehicles arise. According to a study, they pollute 1,850 times more than gasoline vehicles. True or false ?

According to thousands of Internet users, a study published a few weeks ago ensures that electric vehicles are 1,850 times more polluting than thermal cars. This is false, since these Internet users have in fact hijacked a British study which makes no comparison between thermal and electric vehicles.

CO2 emissions “halved with an electric car”

This report only compares emissions generated by tire wear and exhaust for a single pollutant. Namely, fine particles, not CO2. According to the conclusions of the study, the wear of the tires of a thermal car generates up to 1,850 times more fine particles than an exhaust pipe. “We wanted to draw attention to fine particle pollution, but not ignore CO2 pollution, which is halved with an electric car”lamented Nick Molden, president of Emissions Analystics.
