Arbitrary imprisonment in China | Michael Spavor and Ottawa agree

(Ottawa) An agreement worth several million dollars was reached between Ottawa and Michael Spavor, who announced his desire to sue the Canadian government following his almost three-year arbitrary detention in China.

Under the agreement, the Canadian-born entrepreneur would receive several million dollars, the Globe and Mail.

Michael Spavor’s lawyer did not want to confirm the amount his client will receive.

“I can only say that the matter between Mr. Spavor and the Government of Canada is resolved,” said John Kingman Phillips in a statement sent by an assistant early Wednesday evening.

According to Radio-Canada, the man would obtain a check for 7 million.

Global Affairs Canada declined to confirm that an agreement had been reached between the two parties, citing “confidentiality reasons.”

Last November, Michael Spavor accused Michael Kovrig of being responsible for his detention.

He claimed to have been targeted because he had provided the Canadian diplomat with information on North Korea, where he was doing business.

The Canadian government and Michael Kovrig had vigorously denied any espionage activity.

Both Michaels were accused of espionage by Beijing – accusations described as bogus by Ottawa and many Western allies.

They were intercepted a few days after the arrest, on Canadian soil and at the request of the United States, of the number two of the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, Meng Wanzhou.

After more than 1,000 days behind bars, they returned to Canada on September 25, 2021, just after the businesswoman obtained permission to return to China.
